Rhetorical Analysis Body Paragraph (1/3): AP Lang 2017

Ms. Luce begins by acknowledging the acute criticisms that she would mention later in her speech to prepare her audience for those shrewd, perhaps uncomfortable comments she had for their conducts. Ms. Luce metaphorically compares herself as the “rock thrower,” who would hurl rough content to critisize the journalists’ falling integrity, and she employs list of parallel statements of “frown on,” “butter it,” and “exaggerate it” as how she will hyperbolically state the virtues of integrity and heavily critisize violations against it. This characterization of herself as a huge critisizer makes Ms. Luce seems more rational in front of her audience, indicating that Ms. Luce understands the aggressiveness in her later speech rather than her being a lunatic throwing too exaggerated insults. This understanding would make the journalists to be more appreciative of Ms. Luce’s later speech by directly focusing on her content.
