Rhetorical Analysis Body Paragraph: AP Lang 2002

Woolf begins by detailedly describing her childhood memories. She employs a lot of simple phrases such as “my boy,” when her father kindly calls Thoby and how Thoby’s eyes are like “blue eyes very blue” to create an amicable tone for the audience to be engaged in Woolf’s memory under a simplistic but friendly atmosphere. Then, Woolf moves on to discuss her actual journey with short, curt phrases link with asyndeton such as “a little leaping tug; then another; up one hauled” involving verbs of vibrant motions so her audience could envision a vivid imagery of their exciting fishing journey. By creating such a vivid, simple but loaded with pleasure images of her process of catching a fish, Woolf makes her audience appreciate this type of childhood memory that resonate with their most pleasant memories.
